Family Program

The causes and contributors to eating disorders are many and complex.

Our Family Program

Eating disorders create isolation. That’s why it is extremely important that patients learn how to reconnect with themselves and others. At Remuda Ranch at The Meadows, we teach patients and their families the importance a good support system and how to create it.

Eating Disorders and Relationships

Loved ones find eating disorders extremely difficult to understand and accept. Seeing someone you love starve or damage their bodies is stressful, and, often, parents, spouses, and others begin to become intrusive in their efforts to get the person to eat or to stop purging. Soon, the individual may see these loved ones as enemies trying to control her rather than help.

Eating disorders may develop if a person has no other way to speak or represent her feelings. Frequently family dynamics, faulty communication patterns, losses or other stressors such as abuse contributed to negative feelings she could not deal with directly. It is never a simple matter that can be solved by telling the person just to eat. The symptoms have become the individual's way to avoid facing problems more directly or to feel in control when the rest of one's life feels out of control.

Family Week at Remuda Ranch at The Meadows

The Family system is particularly poised for the healing process for a loved one with an eating disorder. Through real-time webinars, we welcome our patients’ families into the process even before treatment officially begins.

Then, during Family Week at Remuda Ranch at The Meadows, families receive an extensive education on eating disorders, communication, and relationships. They also have the opportunity to do an experiential learning session with The Meadows Equine Therapy team, and experience a full-day intensive “truth and love” session, where they and their loved one in recovery can share thoughts and feelings in a way they may not have been able to before.
