effective treatment for boys with anorexiaBoys remain in treatment for 60 days, because that is the minimum amount of time required for eating and anxiety disorder behaviors to stop and new skills to be acquired. It is the amount of time needed for lasting change to occur. Each boy has a team of professionals, who not only treat the primary disorder, but address co-occurring issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse or trauma.

ReddStone provides effective, meaningful and comprehensive treatment. We use a combination of innovative therapies and skilled professionals to give these struggling boys the best possible chance of recovery.

Treatment Team

Each patient has a team of professionals dedicated to his complete and lasting recovery.

  • A Primary Care Provider evaluates and monitors his physical health.
  • A Psychiatric Provider offers psychiatric oversight and closely monitors medications.
  • A Psychologist provides psychometric testing and diagnostic services to facilitate treatment planning and specialized interventions for OCD-spectrum disorders.
  • A Masters or Doctoral Level Therapist meets with him one-on-one and in group sessions to discover the underlying roots of his eating disorder, understand the impact of the anxiety disorder, and help develop healthy coping skills.
  • A Registered Dietitian develops an individualized meal plan to meet his nutritional requirements.
  • A team of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Mental Health Technicians, are on staff 24 hours per day, to ensure an atmosphere of consistency, nurturance, safety and accountability.
  • An Education Coordinator assists each boy with his individual academic needs.

Group Therapy

The goal of individual therapy is to understand the "whys" behind the disorder in a safe environment, free from judgment or ridicule. Group therapy allows the boy to discover he is not alone; that other young men have similar issues. Together, they learn to express feelings, gain additional insight and develop healthy coping skills. For those with OCD or anxiety disorders, individual therapy includes exposure with response prevention.

Group therapies include:

  • Community Meetings
  • group therapy for eating disordered boys
  • Health Issues
  • Recovery Process
  • Skills
  • Nutrition
  • Body Image
  • Chapel
  • Optional Bible Studies
  • Trauma Recovery
  • Substance Recovery
  • Anxiety Reduction
  • Exposure with Response Prevention

Family Involvement

Psychiatric disorders are devastating illnesses; by default, they don't impact just one individual, but the entire family. Everyone has been hurt or wounded or just plain misunderstood. Therefore, treating the boy, without the family, is therapeutically incomplete. The goal of family therapy is to achieve a degree of understanding in the hearts and minds of every family member. It's not about fault or blame; it's about recognizing and respecting each other's perspective. Only when a family is brought to a point of mutual understanding, forgiveness and renewed communication, can they begin to look at the future with genuine hope.

family therapy for boysIn addition to weekly therapeutic phone calls with parents, each boy has a family week, usually about halfway through his stay. The "understanding" between family members is achieved through education and intensive counseling. Families participate in Truth in Love sessions, in which they can express how the disorder has impacted them. These sessions are conducted by skilled family therapists, who not only facilitate, but model the tools required for effective communication. It is a time of real forgiveness and healing.

Experiential Activities

eating disorder challenge courseAt ReddStone, we know boys learn more by doing, less by talking. Therefore, the program components involve action and movement. Although traditional talk therapy is conducted with his primary therapist, a great deal of learning, growth and change takes place during experiential activities.

These include:

Academics

Because we never want patients to fall behind in their studies, each boy meets regularly with his education coordinator. Together, they plan an individualized curriculum to follow while he is in treatment. We remain in touch with the boy's school at home, so he can remain on track.

Aftercare

The goal of ReddStone is to not only help our patients get healthy, but stay healthy. Therefore, we hold classes on identifying and avoiding relapse. We assist each boy in creating a complete aftercare plan, and our follow-up coordinator will contact him five times within his first year after treatment. If additional aftercare resources are needed, our staff members are simply a phone call away.

Outcomes of the Remuda Model of Treatment

eating disorder recoverySince 1990, the Remuda Model of Treatment has provided care to more than 9,000 individuals with eating disorders. While we can’t guarantee that our patients won’t struggle, we can promise that they will have the best possible care and the greatest chance of recovery. 95% of our eating disorder patients are in good recovery one, five and ten years after leaving our programs. Their personal relationships have improved and they are functioning more effectively in school and work. In short, they are living life. And research suggests that the treatment methods used at ReddStone to address OCD and OC-spectrum disorders are effective in at least 80% of patients.

Consider the data for Remuda patients one year after completing treatment:

  • 89% report improved relationships with family and friends.
  • 85% feel that Remuda positively influenced their spiritual growth.
  • The average percent of ideal body weight for anorexic patients is 98%, compared to 78% at admission.
  • 95% are in good recovery. They are living life.

Why Now?

Today, eating and anxiety disorders are being diagnosed in all ages, all cultures, all ethnicities; no one is immune. If left untreated, those suffering from eating disorders can develop critical, often irreversible and life-threatening, medical problems. These include osteoporosis, brain shrinkage, anemia and heart failure. Those with anxiety disorders often become unable to go to school or maintain friendships; they withdraw from life. To say nothing of the destruction of the entire family system where no one - not brothers, sisters or parents - is spared.

But if caught and treated early, recovery can be a reality. Research indicates that the sooner a patient receives treatment, the more likely he is to recover from an eating or anxiety disorder.

Why ReddStone?

Because it works.
