I AM an Anorexic! The Growing Pro-Ana/Mia Trend

The growth of the Pro Ana/Mia movement on the internet has coincided with more young men and women claiming their eating disorder as their identity. Declaring themselves as a persecuted minority, they resist recovery as a type of prejudice or assault on civil rights. Individuals are hosting, chatting, and even creating video diaries claiming that this is their “lifestyle.” In this workshop, Dr. Cabrera will explore this movement, as well as provide up-to-date research on the impact of these websites. Further, a treatment plan and approach will be discussed on how parents and professionals might best respond to this growing trend.
