Diabulimia: A Needle in a Haystack

Dr. Lesley Williams, Primary Care Physician, will discuss the medical complications secondary to eating disorders and diabetes. She will review risk factors and various profiles of those with eating disorders and diabetes. This will be done in a practical and helpful manner with an emphasis on diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment. Dr. Williams will integrate evidenced based treatment with clinical experience by integrating research and clinical case examples.
Objectives:
Following this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand three profiles of diabetic ED patients.
- Perform a medical assessment on a diabetic eating disorder patient and identify three medical complications secondary to diabetes with an eating disorder (ED) patient.
- Identify at least three treatment interventions professionals can do to assist their diabetic ED patients.
- Identify three markers indicating a referral for to a higher level of care for ED diabetic patients.
Speaker:
Dr. Lesley Williams is the Director of Medical Services at Remuda Ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona. Her related publication is Woods, B., Williams, L., (2008). “Pregnancy, Fertility and Eating Disorders”. The Remuda Review, 7,24-19. She is a member of the Academy of Eating Disorders. Dr Williams’ practice focuses on the medical management of women and girls with eating disorders. Dr. Williams is especially interested in co-occurring medical conditions and their impact on the development and maintenance of an eating disorder. Dr. Williams completed her residency training in Family Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. She has participated in numerous speaking engagements. She is passionate about women’s health advocacy and narrowing the gap of eating disorder diagnosis and treatment for women of color.
