Remuda Ranch Inpatient Programs for Women and Girls with Eating Disorders

Remuda Ranch provides Christian inpatient treatment for women, adolescents and children struggling with anorexia, bulimia and related issues. Utilizing the highly effective Remuda Model of treatment, this intensive program is designed to eliminate eating disorder behaviors, regain patient health, and get every individual on the road to recovery.

treatment for women and girls with anorexiaPatients remain in treatment for 45-60 days, because that is the minimum amount of time required for meaningful change to occur. Each patient has a team of professionals, who not only treat the eating disorder, but address co-occurring issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse or trauma. We also use a combination of innovative therapies and skilled professionals to give our patients the best possible chance for complete and lasting recovery. Our age-appropriate programs ensure that each patient is surrounded by her peers and receives treatment from professionals specializing in that specific age group.

Treatment Team

Each patient has a team of eating disorder professionals dedicated to her recovery:

  • A Primary Care Provider evaluates and monitors her physical health.
  • A Psychiatric Provider offers psychiatric oversight and closely monitors medications.
  • A Psychologist provides psychometric testing and diagnostic services to facilitate treatment planning.
  • A Masters or Doctoral Level Therapist meets with her one-on-one and in group sessions to discover the underlying roots of the eating disorder
  • A Registered Dietitian develops an individualized meal plan to meet her nutritional requirements.
  • A team of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Mental Health Technicians are on staff 24 hours per day to ensure an atmosphere of consistency, nurturance, safety and accountability.
  • An Education Coordinator assists each young patient with her individual academic needs.

Group Therapy

The goal of individual therapy is to understand the "whys" behind the eating disorder in a safe environment, free from judgment. Group therapy allows our patients to discover they are not alone; that other women and girls have similar issues. Together, they learn to express feelings, gain additional insight and develop healthy coping skills.

Group therapies include:

  • Community Meetings
  • body image therapy for females with anorexia and bulimia
  • Health Issues
  • Recovery Process
  • Skills
  • Nutrition
  • Body Image
  • Chapel
  • Optional Bible Studies
  • Trauma Recovery
  • Substance Recovery
  • Anxiety Reduction

Family Involvement

Psychiatric disorders are devastating illnesses; by default, they don't impact just one individual, but the entire family. Everyone has been hurt or wounded or just plain misunderstood. Therefore, treating a mother, wife, sister, or daughter without the family, is therapeutically incomplete. The goal of family therapy is to achieve a degree of understanding in the hearts and minds of every family member. It's not about fault or blame; it's about recognizing and respecting each other's perspective. Only when family members are brought to a point of mutual understanding, forgiveness and renewed communication, can they begin to look at the future with genuine hope.

eating disorder family therapyIn addition to therapeutic phone calls with the family, each patient has a family week, usually about halfway through her stay. The "understanding" between family members is achieved through education and intensive counseling. Families participate in Truth in Love sessions, in which they can expresss how the disorder has impacted them. These sessions are conducted by skilled family therapists, who not only facilitate, but model the tools required for effective communication. It is a time of real forgiveness and healing.

Experiential Activities

We recognize that our patients are individuals, and as such, they all learn differently. This is why we utilize a variety of innovative therapies throughout treatment. art therapy for girlsWe know a great deal of learning, growth and change takes place during these activities. These therapies include:

Academics for Adolescents and Children

Because we never want our young patients to fall behind in their studies, each girl meets regularly with her education coordinator. Together, they plan an individualized curriculum to follow while she is in treatment. We remain in touch with the girl's school at home, so she can remain on track.

Aftercare

The goal of treatment is to not only help our patients get healthy, but stay healthy. Therefore, we hold classes on identifying and avoiding relapse. We assist each woman and girl in creating a complete aftercare plan, and our follow-up coordinator will contact her five times within the first year after treatment. If additional resources are needed, our staff members are simply a phone call away.

Outcomes of the Remuda Model of Treatment

eating disorder recoverySince 1990, the Remuda Model of Treatment has provided care to more than 9,000 individuals with eating disorders. While we can't guarantee that our patients won't struggle, we can promise that they will have the best possible care and the greatest chance of recovery. 95% of our patients are in good recovery one, five and ten years after leaving our programs. They no longer have a diagnosable eating disorder, their personal relationships have improved and they are functioning more effectively in school and work; in short, they are living life. Such outstanding outcomes remain unmatched in the treatment of eating disorders.

Consider the data for Remuda patients one year after cmpleting treatment:

  • 89% report improved relationships with family and friends.
  • 85% feel that Remuda positively influenced their spiritual growth.
  • The average percent of ideal body weight for anorexic patients is 98%, compared to 78% at admission.
  • 95% are in good recovery. They are living life.

Why Now?

Today, eating disorders are being diagnosed in all ages, all cultures, all ethnicities; no one is immune. If left untreated, these women and girl can develop critical, often irreversible and life-threatening, medical problems. These include infertility, osteoporosis, brain shrinkage, anemia and heart failure. To say nothing of the destruction of the entire family system where no one - not parents, siblings, husbands or children - is spared.

But if caught and treated early, recovery can be a reality. Research indicates that the sooner a patient of any age receives treatment, the more likely she is to recover from an eating disorder.

Because it works.
