What do we mean by Christian Programs?

One of the most critical aspects of Remuda treatment is our Christian focus. However, confusion and misunderstanding remain as to what we mean by Christian and how this influences patient care. Perhaps the best way to explain what it means is to start by stating what it is not.

We are not faith healers; indeed, with a staff of more than 600, which includes doctors, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists and other professionals, our commitment to science and medicine is evident. It does not mean that patients or their families must share our Christian faith. On the contrary, we extend our treatment to patients of all beliefs. Christian and non-Christian patients alike experience the same excellent outcomes: a 95% recovery rate over one, five and ten years. Finally, it does not mean we are judgmental or intolerant of the belief systems of others. We never force patients to read the Bible, pray or memorize Scripture.

If our Christian emphasis had to be reduced to one word, it would be love, for that is what we extend to every single patient. Our staff endeavors to reflect the character of God through love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Women and girls are often devastated by anorexia or bulimia; we give them the love, care and compassion they need to overcome their disorder and enter recovery.

Many patients come to us searching … searching for hope, something to give their lives meaning, and something or someone to believe in; they come to us searching for God. Will we tell them of our Christian faith and belief in Jesus Christ? When they ask, we answer. Here’s why. From years of experience, we know what an important part faith can play in recovery. We believe that if a patient can shift her focus from herself and her eating disorder onto a loving God – the Lord who loves her unconditionally and created her for a purpose – she will have an excellent foundation for recovery.

Without question, our goal for every patient is recovery; if a new or renewed relationship with God is part of that recovery picture, all the better. Once a patient leaves us, she will face challenges, stress and difficulty in her life simply because everyone does. But if she knows without a doubt that she is not alone, then she can face life not only without an eating disorder, but with less fear.
